ixodoidea

Ticks

ARGASIDAE

Soft-bodied tick

They are 10 mm in size. They are very flattened when unfed and very globular when full of blood. They go through several nymph stages before becoming adults, needing to feed on a host at each stage. They mate outside of their host. They can live for 100 days without feeding and take 3 days to feed. They are usually found in areas where birds nest and rest. They can transmit diseases.

IXODIDAE

Hard-bodied tick

Between 3 and 8 mm when unfed and 35 mm when full of blood, with a flattened, non-segmented, and globular body. They have a mouthpart for tearing and feeding on blood and fluids from the host. They need to feed from 3 different hosts since they molt on the ground. They lay light brown eggs on their host, and the female dies. It takes them 9 days to feed. They can transmit diseases such as Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, Lyme disease, borreliosis, encephalitis, etc.

ACARIFORME

Dust mite

Measuring 0.2 – 0.5 mm, with 8 legs and no eyes, they feed on small particles of organic matter decomposed by fungi. They are found in indoor house dust. They are scarce in dry, high-altitude places. They proliferate in textile fibers and can live on our skin. They do not bite or transmit diseases, but their droppings can cause allergies or asthma.
